Does it limit heat loss? Can it withstand rain and wind? Does it meet the needs of the home? European Standard EN 14351-1 provides a common European framework for assessing and declaring performance, enabling professionals and buyers to compare documented information. [2]

1. What the standard covers

EN 14351-1:2006+A2:2016 covers windows and external doorsets, regardless of the material used in their construction. It therefore also applies to aluminium doors.

It covers the complete assembly, including integral fanlights and sidelights within a single frame. It does not cover internal doors, garage doors or power-operated pedestrian doorsets. An apartment entrance door opening onto an internal communal corridor therefore does not automatically fall within the scope of EN 14351-1. [1]

2. What CE marking and the Declaration of Performance mean

For a door covered by the harmonised standard, the general requirement is a Declaration of Performance (DoP) and CE marking, subject to the statutory exceptions. The manufacturer takes responsibility for the declared performance. However, CE marking does not mean that all doors offer equally high levels of thermal insulation or weather tightness. [2, 8]

Before placing an order, request the DoP and confirm that it covers the door type being offered. Check the manufacturer, identification code, intended use, applicable standard and declared performance. NPD means “No Performance Determined”: no performance is declared for that characteristic. It does not demonstrate either good or poor performance. If the characteristic is required for the project, appropriate supporting documentation is needed. [2]

3. Which performance characteristics are worth comparing

Thermal insulation: request the thermal transmittance coefficient Ud, in W/(m²K), for the complete doorset. A lower value means less heat transfer under comparable conditions. Do not equate the performance of a panel or profile with that of the entire door. Check the dimensions and configuration to which the value applies. [3]

Air permeability, watertightness and resistance to wind load: request the relevant classes under EN 12207, EN 12208 and EN 12210 respectively. A general description such as “weather-resistant” does not allow a meaningful comparison. [4]

Sound insulation: request documented performance for the specific assembly. Values should be compared using a common assessment method and should relate to the noise relevant to the project, such as road traffic. EN ISO 717-1 sets out the rating of airborne sound insulation. [5]

The right choice depends on the location and exposure of the entrance. A sheltered door beneath a canopy faces different conditions from an exposed entrance with no protection from the wind. The professional should specify the required performance in accordance with the project design and applicable regulations. Simply stating “in accordance with EN 14351-1” is no substitute for selecting suitable performance levels. [2]

4. What professionals need to check

The documentation must cover the assembly being offered and its permitted variations. Changes to dimensions, glazing, hardware or construction should not be assumed to be covered automatically by any given test report.

The manufacturer needs technical documentation and factory production control (FPC) to maintain the declared performance. The involvement of a notified body depends on the applicable assessment system and intended use. General ISO certification does not replace these obligations. [2, 8]

5. Security and installation

CE marking under EN 14351-1 does not automatically demonstrate a burglar resistance class of RC2 or RC3. This must be substantiated under EN 1627 for the complete doorset. Similarly, fire resistance and smoke control are covered by EN 16034 and require the corresponding supporting documentation. [1, 6]

Also request written installation, use and maintenance instructions. The connection between the frame and the building requires particular attention: the product’s thermal transmittance calculation does not include the thermal bridge at the junction with the wall. [2, 3]

The best choice is a door with suitable, documented performance and correct installation. Ask for these details in the quotation so that you can compare the price alongside the actual specification.

6. Frequently asked questions — FAQ

Is CE marking mandatory?

Yes. It has been mandatory since 1 February 2010 for external doors covered by the harmonised standard and placed on the European market, subject to specific exceptions. [2]

Is CE marking alone enough to choose a door?

You need to check the performance declared in the DoP and whether it is suitable for the project. [8]

Does a security lock guarantee an RC3 rating?

The class applies to the complete doorset, not to an individual component. [6]

What should I request before placing an order?

The DoP, CE marking details, confirmation that the documentation covers the assembly, and installation, use and maintenance instructions. [2]

Are TEHNi doors manufactured in accordance with the EN 14351-1 standard?

Yes, all TEHNi doors are manufactured in accordance with the EN 14351-1 standard and bear the CE mark and a Declaration of Performance (DoP) with measurements from official European Union laboratories.

7.
