As the climate changes, the door must continue to provide comfort and work reliably for years. That changes what we need to consider when designing, manufacturing and installing it.

1. What the European data show

Europe is warming at roughly twice the global average rate, according to the Copernicus and WMO report on 2025. [1] The IPCC projects stronger and more prolonged heatwaves and greater aridity in the Mediterranean, while rainfall patterns vary by region and season. [2] The European Environment Agency also warns of risks to buildings from extreme heat and flooding. [3] These are findings about the climate. The implications for doors set out below are an engineering interpretation and must be adapted to each project.

2. Heat is changing the demands placed on an entrance

When direct sunlight strikes the outside surface, the door leaf and frame heat up while the interior stays cool. Large or dark-coloured doors call for particular attention to dimensions, clearances, stiffness and the way materials behave over repeated heating and cooling cycles. Resistance to distortion and smooth operation should be assessed at the actual door size and for its intended orientation.

A thermal break that interrupts heat flow through metal components, appropriate insulation and fewer thermal bridges all contribute to indoor comfort. The US Department of Energy highlights the importance of thermal breaks in metal frames and low air leakage. [4] Where a door includes glazing, the choice of glass and solar control should account for shading, orientation and the project’s climate. A single Ud value does not, by itself, describe the door’s entire summer performance.

3. Rain and wind Details make the difference

Extreme weather events demand careful design of weather seals, thresholds, drainage and the junction between frame and wall. An excellent door can still fail if water collects at the threshold or gaps remain around the installation. Air permeability, watertightness and resistance to wind load should be documented for the specific configuration and matched to the building’s exposure. This does not mean wind conditions are changing in the same way everywhere.

4. From manufacturing to end of life

Adaptation starts in the factory: consistent assembly, checks on the fit of weather seals, surface protection suited to the conditions of use, and clear installation and maintenance instructions. At the same time, environmental performance is about more than reducing heating and cooling demand. The revised European directive on buildings brings emissions from material production, transport, use and end of life into whole-life assessment. [5] Documented material sourcing, service life, repairability and recycling therefore matter increasingly. A door is not automatically “green” simply because it is made of aluminium.

The entrance door of the future will face two tests: how reliably it protects the home in its local climate and how responsibly it was made. For both, measured performance counts for more than a broad promise.

5. Frequently asked questions

Is an aluminium entrance door suitable for areas with heatwaves?

Yes, provided its construction, size, colour, orientation and installation have been considered together and the relevant performance has been verified.

What should I check before choosing a door?

Ask for documented thermal performance for the complete doorset, data on air permeability, watertightness and wind resistance, and installation instructions for the particular opening.

Does a thermal break reduce heat inside the home?

It reduces heat transfer through metal components. Overall summer comfort also depends on glazing, shading, airtightness and installation.

6.
